Justin third quickest in opening day of Barber test
25-February-2010Justin and his new team Dreyer and Reinbold Racing tested together for the first time yesterday as part of a two-day IZOD IndyCar Series open test at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. It was the second time that Justin (No. 22 Z-Line Designs) and his new team-mate Mike Conway (No. 24 Dad's Root Beer) have tested at the 2.3 mile road course. The track will host the third race of the upcoming season, the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, on April 11.
Justin quickly gelled with his crew and engineer and the No. 22 Z-Line Designs car ended the final session of a chilly day with the third quickest time of 1:10.7397 (117.049 mph), a shade off the pace-setting Team Penske cars of Ryan Briscoe (1:10.5020, 117.438 mph) and Helio Castroneves (1:10.7146). Justin’s day ended a bit prematurely late in the day when he brushed the wall coming out of turn one. The car wasn't badly damaged and Justin will be back out on track again today.
"The first day in the car was really good,” said Justin.
“It was a pretty positive day and we kept making improvements. All in all I think that it went well and I'm pleased with P3. I'm getting comfortable in the car and with my new engineer and crew. Unfortunately, at the end of the day I just clipped the grass going into turn one and the car snapped around on me. The car isn't too badly damaged and I'm okay. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."Mike Conway was able to log a number of laps and get some valuable track time in the No. 24 Dad’s Root Beer car, but struggled to find the right balance on the car, rounding out the day with the 17th fastest time of 1:12.1543.
Both cars will be back on track today for the second day of testing.
